Demons & Dragons

Tom Elenbaas

Was listening to Imagine Dragons song "Demons" the other day, and found the lyrics really interesting. Here's a slice:

When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

When your dreams all fail
And the ones we hail
Are the worst of all
And the blood’s run stale

I wanna hide the truth
I wanna shelter you
But with the beast inside
There’s nowhere we can hide

No matter what we breed
We still are made of greed
This is my kingdom come
This is my kingdom come

We all have demons, don't we? Some of them are easier to hide; some aren't. Some are socially acceptable; some aren't. It's said that we all have secrets, and some of us are better at sharing those secrets than others. But here's the reality: what's inside eventually comes out. Whether it's greed or anger or bitterness or feelings of worthlessness or inferiority, the sins that make our insides into demons we wish to hide make us into dualists outside - living a life of duplicity and hiddenness.

It doesn't have to be that way, though. That's what confession is for. Confession is something that the contemporary church has left behind that could use a resurgence. Hiding our demons results in their growth. Confessing them disables them, frees us from them, and opens us up to a world of potential light in which demons cower. Your personal Smaug guarding the fortunes of your destruction is not only killing you, but others around you.

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside
It’s where my demons hide
It’s where my demons hide

What happens when we let someone look into our eyes, get close, feel the heat and face the darkness? What if someone loved us enough to face our demons with us? What if they walked into the darkness with us bearing light to shine on the demons? Is it possible that alone we cannot slay these demons, but through true love bearing the light of life that we can escape?

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how
